Baranagar is an Ancient Locality on the Eastern side of River Ganges adjacent to Kolkata Municipal Corporation area. Baranagar was originally a Portuguese settlement that became the seat of a Dutch trading station and an important river anchorage for Dutch shipping. The Dutch had homes here in the seventeenth century. There was a hog factory where about 3,000 hogs a year were slaughtered and salted for export. Later it became the centre for the extensive jute trade, manufacturing gunny bags In 1795 it was ceded to the British. Constituted as the municipality of North Suburban in 1869, thecity was renamed Baranagar in 1889. It is under 113 Baranagar AC in 24 Parganas District of West Bengal. The Municipal Legislation system is in Operation in this area since 1969.As per Census 2011 the Population of Baranagar is 245213 with 85.14 % Literacy, 943 Female out of Per Thousand Male Sex Ratio, 34440 /Sq Km Density of Population in 34 Municipal Wards spread throughout 7.12 Square Km of area. It has 212 Km of Pucca Road and 190.22 KM of Pucca Drain.

RTI ACT 2005:

Right to Information (RTI) is an Act of the Parliament of India to provide for setting out the practical regime of right to information for citizens. Under the provisions of the Act, any citizen of India may request information from a “public authority” (a body of Government or “instrumentality of State”) which is required to reply expeditiously or within thirty days. The Act also requires every public authority to computerize their records for wide dissemination and to proactively certain categories of information so that the citizens need minimum recourse to request for information formally.
